In the ongoing debate between Caleb and Justin, online discussions often devolve into heated exchanges. Many arguments against drafting Caleb Williams boil down to personal preference. Critics cite his outspoken nature, occasional cockiness, puzzling interactions with the media, and, absurdly, his nail painting. This last point is often steeped in toxic masculinity and homophobia. And whoever makes this argument is just an idiot.
However, the core of the disdain for Caleb seems to stem from one simple fact: he’s not Justin Fields. Unlike Fields, the humble kid from Georgia who endeared himself to fans through a Netflix special showcasing his down-to-earth demeanor, Caleb represents a stark contrast. Hailing from DC, he exudes a California-cool vibe that doesn’t quite resonate in the Midwest. Fields, on the other hand, embodies the essence of a Chicago kid – beloved by teammates and easy to cheer for. If I didn’t know he was from Georgia I’d guess he went to De La Salle or Brother Rice.
For Caleb to win over the Bears’ fanbase, should he be drafted, he’ll likely need to adopt a more Midwestern style and shed some of his West Coast persona. Adjusting his approach to align better with the values and expectations of the Midwest could help him gain the support he needs from the team’s supporters. It’s gonna be a rude awakening coming to Chicago.
