We’re a few weeks into the offseason, and Bears fans are at each other’s throats over who should be next year’s quarterback. If you’re in the Justin camp, you’re labeled an over-obsessed fanboy, clinging to mediocrity and afraid of change. On the other hand, if you’re rooting for Caleb, you’re dismissed as a Gen Z internet troll, only capable of watching YouTube highlights and conforming to mainstream media. But amidst the heated debate, the million-dollar question remains: who’s actually right?

The most frustrating aspect of this discourse is that both sides have valid points. Caleb undoubtedly possesses the skills of a standout player, with an arm that defies logic and a seemingly boundless potential. Meanwhile, Justin stands out as a unique athlete who has weathered a storm of adversity and still managed to shine.

Where do I stand in all of this? I’m firmly on Team Justin. When we analyze his situation purely through statistical lenses, he appears to be an average to below-average quarterback who hasn’t quite hit his stride. However, when we contextualize Fields’ journey, we see a young quarterback thrust into an abysmal team situation in his sophomore year, with a front office more focused on cleaning up the mess left by the previous regime than on providing their budding star with the necessary support. It’s akin to expecting a sports car to perform flawlessly after filling it with the wrong fuel.

But now, we have the right fuel: draft capital, cap space, and a competent offensive coordinator. The path forward is clear: Keep Justin and focus on building a stronger team around him.
