Last season, Justin Fields found himself in a high-stakes game of survival, navigating through relentless pressure and muddy pockets as if he were in a gridiron obstacle course. Admittedly, his tendency to linger with the ball contributed to his frequent escapes from the pocket. However, much of this chaos stemmed from our struggles at the center position.
Lucas Patrick, while embodying admirable leadership qualities and veteran savvy, he often left much to be desired in pass protection. His efforts were marred by subpar performances and, at times, downright atrocious snaps. From the outside looking in, it seemed like he struggled with snaps whenever he needed to focus on not getting BLOWN UP!
Enter Jackson Powers – Johnson, a force of nature. Delving into his college tape revealed his NASTINESS. Usually, watching offensive line tape requires a skilled eye for technique. However, this was an easy watch. Whether bulldozing through double teams alongside the guard or pulling on sweeps, he shows that he is a complete animal in the trenches. Pairing him with Teven Jenkins would create problems for defenses in the NFC North.
However, the road to securing Powers Johnson may prove difficult. With the Bears lacking a second-round pick, acquiring him might require some maneuvering. Yet, in the grand scheme of fortifying our center position, such a maneuver appears necessary.
Here’s to hoping Ryan Poles can orchestrate another masterclass to secure this game-changer, solidifying the Bears’ offensive front for years to come.
